Last week I got a picture text from Tommy E with a photo of a huge crevasse up on Hood with a jump carved out above it. Needless to say I was up there the next day, hiking far out into the canyon (and wishing I had more adequate gear for glacier travel) to check out the setup. Tommy and Josh Larkin had built a pretty gnarly gap over a huge chasm filled with chunks of ice. The stakes were high, but Josh and Tommy kept their wits about them, sending the gap several times as me and Richard Hallman got the shot. Meanwhile at Mt. Hood #2 from Ethan Stone on Vimeo. After a few false starts, I've started telling some of the summertime stories (there are many of them) from on and around the slopes of Mt. Hood. Powder Magazine was nice enough to offer me a column on their website for the purpose, so I've been supplying them with regular installments of text, photos and video called "Meanwhile at Mt. Hood." I just finished up a feature profile on my good friend Tommy Ellingson for the ESPN Freeskiing blog. This was one of the more challenging pieces that I've ever written, and I spent a lot of time dwelling on each sentence and paragraph. Writing a profile on someone is a big responsibility; it's your job to represent this person to the world, and whatever you write, for better or for worse, will become a part of that person's legacy. For my part, I figured that if I could represent about one quarter of the awesomeness of Tommy E, I'd be off to a good start.
